Russia won the Women’s Relay and Austria won the Men’s Relay, as Germany had to settle for second twice on home soil at IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding. The tracks at Ruhpolding are always exciting to watch with their downhill corner leading into the range/finish, which always causes excitement as many athletes struggle to stay on their skis. This time around was no different, as the slushy conditions produced at least two big wipeouts.
The Russian women used 7 spare rounds, and edged out the German team which struggled in the first leg and had one penalty with five extra rounds. The Norwegians also struggled in the first leg, but battled back to claim third place. The Canadians finished 12th, after using seven extra rounds.
In the Men’s Relay, a three-team final lap battle ended with Austrian joy as Dominik Landertinger pipped Simon Schempp at the finish line. The Canadians had a strong race, finishing in 8th place with eight extra rounds.
The Americans did not enter a team in either relay.
Tomorrow’s competition is the Women’s Individual, which starts at 8:15 Eastern, 5:15 Pacific.
