While the World Cup biathlon circuit continues its tour of Maine, IBU Cup #6 was taking place over the weekend in Brezno-Osrblie, Slovakia.
The field was strengthened by the presence of the top Slovakian biathletes, who chose to participate in the IBU Cup on home soil instead of travelling to North America. However, the Slovakians struggled on the shooting range and only managed two third place finishes. There were no North Americans participating.
The event consisted of an Individual competition on the 5th and a Sprint competition on the 6th.
The Men’s Individual (complete results) was won by Erik Lesser of Germany, who finished in a time of 53:02.2 with two penalties. Second place went to his fellow countryman Robin Kiel, who was 1:12.7 back, also with two penalties. Vasja Rupnik of Slovenia was third, 1:36.8 back with three penalties.
Jori Moerkve of Norway won the Women’s Individual (complete results) with one penalty and a total time of 49:27.1. Olga Abramova of Russia was second, 1:20.4 back with one penalty. Third place went to Marine Boillet of France who was 2:22.7 back with three penalties.
Erik Lesser followed up on his victory in the Individual by also winning the Men’s Sprint (complete results) in a time of 29:52.8 with one penalty. Florian Graf of Germany took second place, 38.3 seconds behind Lesser with one penalty. Slovakian star Pavol Hurajt took third place, 39.9 seconds back with no penalties.
Anastasiya Tokareva of Russia won the Women’s Sprint (complete results) with clean shooting to finish in a time of 24:53.5.
