Men’s Relay: Russia, Germany and Austria atop Podium

Russia edged out Germany in a final loop battle, while Austria held on to take third in today’s Men’s Relay competition at le Grand Bornand, France.

The Russian team of Ivan Tcherezov, Alexander Loginov, Evgeniy Garanichev and Anton Shipulin were never far from the lead, finally taking it from the Germans on the last lap as Shipulin shot clean in standing while Simon Schempp needed one spare round. Shipulin and Schempp left the range at the same time, and while Schempp took the lead from Shipulin midway through the lap, Shipulin had a bit more power down the finish chute to pip Schempp at the line.

The Russians and the Germans each used 5 spare rounds, while the third place Austrians used 7. The US team of Lowell Bailey, Tim Burke, Jeremy Teela and Leif Nordgren finished 8th, having used 11 spare rounds. The Canadians did not enter a team. Here are the complete results.

IBU World Cup 3 continues into the weekend with the Sprint competitions on Saturday and the Pursuit competitions on Sunday. The start lists for the Sprints will be determined later today.
