The Swedish team of Jenny Jonsson, Anna Carin Zidek, Anna Maria Nilsson and Helena Ekholm won the Women’s 4 x 6 km relay in the fog, wind and rain of Oberhof, Germany. Just as in yesterday’s Men’s relay, the brutal weather wreaked havoc on the shooting range, with extra rounds and penalties causing frequent changes in the standings throughout the competition.
The Swedish women moved up the standings with each leg and took the lead from the Ukraine on the final leg when Valj Semerenko struggled on the shooting range while Helena Ekholm excelled.
Sweden finished in a time of 1:17:53.1 with eight extra rounds and one penalty. The French team of Anais Bescond, Marie Dorin, Pauline Macabies and Marie Laure Brunet finished second, 52.3 seconds back of Sweden with nine extra rounds and three penalties. Third place went to the Belorussians (1:34.1 back, 13 extra rounds, one penalty), whose pride for finishing on the podium was evident in their big smiles and excitement in the finish corral.
The Canadian women were one of the nine teams (half the field!) who were lapped by the Swedes, which required them to withdraw from the competition.
