The results from the IBU Cup #4 event in Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic demonstrated the depth of the German and Russian biathlon teams. Ten of the twelve podium finishes were taken by German or Russian athletes, with several others finishing just off the podium.
The event consisted of the Men’s 20 km Individual and the Women’s 15 km Individual competitions on 8 January and the Men’s 10 km Sprint and the Women’s 7.5 km Sprint on the 9th.
The Men’s 20 km Individual (complete results) was won by Erik Lesser of Germany in a time of 50:45.5, with no penalties. Alexey Volkov of Russia produced another strong performance to finish second, 25 seconds behind Lesser with no penalties. Third place went to Daniel Bohm, who was 1:06.3 back with one penalty.
Natalya Burdyga of the Ukraine won the Women’s 15 km Individual (complete results), relying on her fast skiing to finish in 47:15.9 with two penalties. Franziska Hildebrand of Germany was second, 4.9 seconds back with no penalties. Juliane Doll of Germany came in third, 21.2 seconds back with three penalties.
Evgeniy Garanichev of Russia won the Men’s 10 km Sprint (complete results), shooting clean to finish in a time of 22:59.1. Toni Lang of Germany took second place, 14.4 seconds behind Garanichev with one penalty. Third place was a tie between Bohm and Victor Vasiliev of Russia, both finishing 31 seconds back, Bohm with one penalty and Vasiliev shooting clean.
Juliane Doll moved two places up the podium by winning the Women’s 7.5 km Sprint (complete results) in a time of 23:04.2, with one penalty. Local favorite Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic took second, 11.8 seconds behind Doll with clean shooting. Third place went to Ekaterina Glazyrina of Russia, who was 21.5 seconds back with two penalties.
The next stop on the IBU Cup tour is in Altenberg, Germany, from 12-15 January. The event consists of a Sprint competition on the 14th and a Pursuit on the 15th.
