The biathlon season officially kicked off this past weekend with the IBU Cup 1 from Idre, Sweden. The event featured back-to-back Sprint competitions, with strong performances from the Canadian team.
Saturday was a great day for the Canadians, with three men and two women in the top ten. Nathan Smith finished second, only 3.9 seconds behind Russia’s Timofey Lapshin who both shot clean. Megan Imrie was 6th (+55.2, no penalties), Megan Heinicke was 7th (+1:02.6, no penalties), Marc-Andre Bedard was 7th (+38.3, no penalties) and Brendan Green was 9th (+40.4, no penalties).
There were many other strong performances by the Canadians and Americans, with Lanny Barnes 13th, Scott Gow 13th, Audrey Vaillancourt 16th, Hannah Dreissigacker 26th, Rosanna Crawford 35th, Sean Doherty 39th, Jeremy Teela 41st, Claude Godbout 50th, Julia Ransom 58th, Jay Hakkinen 69th and Macx Davies 84th.
Norway’s Erlend Bjoentegaard was third, 14.3 seconds back with one penalty. Weronika Nowakowska-Ziemniak won the Women’s Sprint, 39.1 seconds ahead of Fanny Welle-Strand Horn and 41.3 seconds ahead of Eva Tofalvi.
Saturday’s top performers could not repeat their lights-out shooting on the Sunday however, and the top North American was rookie Julia Ransom in 16th place. Hannah Dreissigacker was 28th, Brendan Green 33rd, Claude Godbout 38th, Jay Hakkinen 41st, Christian Gow 43rd, Jeremy Teela 46th, Marc-Andre Bedard 48th, Macx Davies 50th, Sean Doherty 65th, Audrey Vaillancourt 72nd, Lanny Barnes 85th and Scott Gow 86th.
