Andrea Henkel won her first competition of the year and Emil Hegle Svendsen delighted the Norwegian crowds by surging to a victory in the final stretch as the Mass Start competitions brought IBU World Cup 7 in Oslo Holmenkollen to a close.
Henkel had one penalty in the first shooting stage in the Women’s Mass Start (IBU article, results) but shot clean the rest of the way to cruise to victory over Darya Domracheva (+26.6, four penalties) and Teja Gregorin (+27.2, no penalties).
Zina Kocher placed 29th (+5:18.2, eight penalties).
Svendsen (two penalties) and Andreas Birnbacher were locked in a last lap battle in the Men’s Mass Start (IBU article, results) but Birnbacher could not match Svendsen’s raw power on the final hill and settled for second place (+6.3, no penalties). Third place went to Evgeniy Garanichev (+17.8, two penalties).
Brendan Green had a great time in Norway, notching his three career best results at this event. Tim Burke led a super performance by all four North American competitors, finishing eighth (+1:00, three penalties). Green was 10th (+1:13.5, two penalties), JP Le Guellec was 12th (+1:25.7, two penalties) and Lowell Bailey was 14th (+1:48.2, four penalties).
The next stop on the IBU World Cup circuit is in Kontiolahti, Finland. That event begins with the Men’s and Women’s Sprints on 10 February.
