Miriam Gössner and Martin Fourcade were victorious in the Sprint competitions at IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding, Germany, while Scott Perras, Scott Gow and Annalies Cook put it all together in career-best performances.
Gössner relied once more on her world-beating speed to win the Women’s Sprint (results, IBU article) despite one penalty. Darya Domracheva was second (one penalty, +7.1) and Kaisa Makarainen was third (one penalty, +17.5).
Cook shot clean and finished in 26th place (+1:24.8). Sara Studebaker was 33rd (no penalties, +1:32.5), Zina Kocher was 52nd (two penalties, 2:09.4), Susan Dunklee was 53rd (two penalties, +2:09.5), Megan Heinicke was 63rd (two penalties, +2:38.4), Rosanna Crawford was 65th (one penalty, +2:44.2) and Audrey Vaillancourt was 81st (two penalties, +3:24.7). Lanny Barnes did not finish.
Fourcade was dominant once again in the Men’s Sprint (results, IBU article), shooting clean and skiing confidently to victory. Two Russians completed the podium: Evgeny Ustyugov (no penalties, +16.4) and Andrei Makoveev (no penalties, +33.0).
Perras and Gow each shot clean, with Perras finishing 10th (+49.0) and Gow in 29th (1:12.3). Other North American finishers were Lowell Bailey 26th, JP Le Guellec 41st, Jay Hakkinen 54th, Russell Currier 80th and Leif Nordgren 86th.
