The Russian Biathlon Union website recently featured an article about the upcoming decision on the awarding of an “A” licence to the biathlon venue in Sochi by the IBU.
Interestingly the article noted that there are “still some minor concerns regarding the track”, which makes me wonder whether there will be any changes made before the Olympics. The tracks at Sochi are very difficult, with a huge uphill right at the beginning and twisty downhills that don’t allow time for rest and have resulted in a couple of entertaining spills.
If there are changes to be made, my only issue with the tracks in Sochi is that they look way too industrial, with light and snowmaking towers lining the course everywhere. Making these installations a little more subdued would improve the look and feel of an already beautiful venue.
