The 2017 North American Summer Biathlon Championships were held in Canmore last weekend and I was fortunate enough to be there at a coaching course so I could watch. The competitions on Saturday were cancelled due to poor air quality due to forest fires in the area, but the conditions were better on Sunday so they ran a Sprint competition that day.
Several national team athletes were competing, as well as junior team members and athletes from local clubs.
The results from the event are available on the Biathlon Canada website here: http://biathloncanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Sunday-Sprint-Results-Summer-Champs-2017.pdf
Jason Albert at fasterskier.com reports on Biathlon Canada’s funding from Own the Podium was cut to zero in an Olympic year: http://fasterskier.com/fsarticle/otp-cuts-biathlon-canadas-base-funding-zero/
The article goes into some depth about the financial struggles Biathlon Canada has faced.
Biathlon Canada had received OTP base funding between $250,000 and $435,000 over the past three years, but will receive $0 base funding for this year.
OTP bases its funding recommendations on what it considers to be the “podium potential” of athletes or teams. Heading into the 2018 Olympics it appears that they have little confidence in Canadian medal potential.
