Biathlon Canada National Team Coach Roddy Ward recently wrote on his blog about motivating athletes.
The post, titled “Seven Thoughts on Motivating Athletes”, is a response by Ward to the view held by some coaches that it is up to athletes to motivate themselves.
Ward’s thoughts are based in part on his practical experiences as a coach; the seven thoughts Ward writes about in this post seem to be mostly aimed at athletes in the Train to Win and Train to Compete stages of the Canadian Sport for Life Long-Term Athlete Development Model.
That said, I agree with Ward’s view that it is a coach’s responsibility to ensure that their athletes are motivated. Also, I think that several of Ward’s thoughts are just as relevant for younger athletes as they are for national team athletes.
