2011 IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships Review

The 2011 IBU Summer Biathlon Championships were held last weekend in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, marking the end of the summer biathlon season. But before we start looking ahead to the upcoming biathlon season, lets take a look at who was crowned Champion.

The event began on Friday with the Mixed Relays, with the Russians winning gold in both the Junior and Senior categories. Ukraine won silver and Slovakia picked up the bronze in the Senior category, while Slovenia won silver and Bulgaria took bronze for the Juniors.

The Sprint competitions were held on Saturday. In the Men’s Sprint, Dmitri Yaroshenko of Russia won gold despite two penalties, outskiing Olexander Bilanenko and Vladimir Iliev, who each shot clean. Valj Semerenko won gold in the Women’s Sprint, 2.7 seconds ahead of Krystyna Palka, and 32.3 seconds ahead of Jana Gerekova.

The event concluded on Sunday with the Pursuit Competitions. Dmitri Yaroshenko concluded a dream Championships with his third gold medal in the Men’s Pursuit, with Olexander Bilanenko picking up another silver and Krasimir Anev taking bronze. Krystyna Palka moved up to the top of the podium in the Women’s Pursuit, trading places with Valj Semerenko. Weronika Nowakowska-Ziemniak came in third.
